The maximised window thing in Windows is definitely an OS issue. I instinctively resize windows when they’re on a screen any bigger than 19" (large swaths of white doc/bg + LCD in whatever mode = too bright), and get really weird looks in return. Anyway, as it happens, I was literally just dithering about whether to get a laptop stand for my MacBook, or a LCD and something that will hold both that and the MacBook.. I think I will keep waiting and save up for the latter
Nice to see another fan of Things! It’s really a godsend.
I used multiple monitors on my desktop PC but now that my laptop has taken over as my main computer I find myself relying on multiple desktops (Spaces) and organizing my windows by general tasks. The first desktop holds my main browser (Opera), feed reader (NNN) and IM (Adium). http://i46.tinypic.com/295r144.jpg I tend to keep these apps (well, except Adium) fully maximized and customize their UIs to more widescreen-friendly layouts (tabs on the side etc). Adium for me is a minimal contact list stuck to the left side (hidden behind the browser in the screenshot) with a small, floating message window. I use the dock icons to bring each application to focus as required, and it’s generally pretty snappy. Desktop 2 is my productivity screen - Things goes here, as well as my calendar, word/text processors, secondary browser (FF), Together, Pixelmator and Picasa. I don’t really use the other two default desktops very often, but they’re there just in case. It’s really quite a lot simpler than it sounds. Well, anyway, how is Chrome for the Mac? I’m only using FF for some must-have extensions but I’m wiling to switch if Chrome is perceptibly better/faster once they open the addon floodgates. (As an aside, [power] web browsing on Snow Leopard is still something of a nightmare because of the disastrous Flash plugin performance - and Chrome is not going to be any solution for that at all.)
Chrome for Mac recovers gracefully when Flash crashes. Just reload the page and everything will be fine. Safari is still the fastest browser in terms of page-loading times.
